An update on Canine Spirocercosis

Preventative Medication Now Available!

Spirocerca lupi is a worm that affects dogs in RSA and some Mediterranean countries. The life-cycle involves a dung beetle and the immature worm is transmitted to the dog when it eats an infected dung beetle (or ingests anything that may have eaten a dung beetle e.g. birds, lizards etc.) Your dog cannot get Spirocerca from eating dog faeces.

The adult worms cause nodules in the oesophagus (see photo) and symptoms include weight loss, regurgitation (many owners perceive this as “vomiting”)and difficulty swallowing. Sudden death can occur due to rupture of an aortic aneurysm (a thin, weak area of the artery wall) caused by the parasite migrating through the aorta. Oesophageal nodules can also become cancerous over a period of time.

Can I prevent it from happening to my dog?

Due to the increase in prevalence of this parasite in dogs in RSA, more research is being done on S.lupi and hopefully more economical diagnostic tests and treatment will become available. Recent studies have been done on a group of medications called macrocylic lactones as a monthly preventative against S.lupi. Although these medications are not 100% effective in preventing the parasite, treated dogs that did become infected showed less severe lesions and clinical signs.

Further research is indicated to provide more information on these drugs in the future however they

remain the only registered medication for dogs that have shown promise in preventing this terrible disease.

We advise monthly treatment of all puppies from the age of 6-8 weeks. Adult dogs starting on preventative treatment need a blood test called a Knotts test prior to starting treatment. This is to rule out infection with a harmless blood parasite called Dirofilaria which occurs in KZN. Dirofilaria does not cause clinical disease in dogs however affected dogs may show an allergic reaction when treated with macrocyclic lactones. The Knotts test is not mandatory and pet owners may choose to start treatment without it, however as we have had some dogs testing positive in the past, we do recommend this precaution.

Additional measures to prevent S.lupi include removing dog faeces from the property daily and trying to prevent your dog “hunting” lizards, birds etc. (not always feasible!).

UNDERSTANDING POISONING OF YOUR PETS.

 By Dr. Natli Coetzee

Various agricultural insecticide products as well as  products used to control external parasites on animals are available on the market.   A lot of these products contain organophosphates or carbamates as active ingredients (the poison).

Carbamates and organophosphates are related toxins that affect the nervous system of humans and animals, interfering with conduction of impulses to the heart, muscles and intestinal tract.

APPEARANCE OF THE POISON

The most commonly perceived product to be used for malicious poisoning contains the active ingredient aldicarb/temik which is formulated as small black granules that resembles poppy seeds.  However other granular products may resemble the aldicarb granules and in some cases differently coloured granules may be coloured black by criminals.  These granules are tasteless with a very slight sulfur-like smell.

CLINICAL SYMPTOMS OF POISONING

Foaming at the mouth or drooling of saliva

Muscle tremors

Vomiting

Diarhoea – often jelly like but not always

Difficult breahing

Seizures (as in epilepsy)

Weakness

Paralysis

Slow heart rate

Small pupils

NB!  Not all of  these signs might be present and non of these signs as a single signs is diagnostic for poisoning, it is the total picture that counts!

HOW TO HANDLE A SUSPECTED POISONED ANIMAL

Human contact with the poison (bait) itself, the animal’s vomit or diarhoea can lead to human intoxication.  Wrap the animal in a blanket as to avoid direct potential contact and also it will keep the animal warm.  Use rubber gloves and wear glasses (even sunglasses) as the poison can be absorbed from your eyes, skin or inhalation of dust from the contaminated soil.  Any skin coming into contact with the poison should be washed immediately with soap.  Get your dog to the vet as soon as possible, time is of the essence.

WHAT TREATMENT IS REQUIRED

Intensive  veterinary treatment is required as soon as possible as both poisons usually result in rapid death.

*  If you noticed your pet is still alert but not vomiting, give it dishwashing liquid or washing powder with warm water to make it vomit.  Don’t spend a lot of time doing it as you need to get to a vet asap.

*  If  your animal has already vomited or is not alert,  DON’T give anything orally (washing powder or activated charcoal) as the poison causes the throat muscle to become paralyzed and the oral treatment to end up in the lungs which is a death sentence also.

*   If you have atropine at home you can administer 0.5mg/kg intramuscular to buy you time to get to the vet.

*  Do not make the mistake of thinking if your dog is looking better after the atropine injection you won’t need any further veterinary assistance as poisoning causes many problems in your animal that should be dealt with to maximize the chances of survival.   *  Animals can die a couple of days after successful treatment at first. If your pet survives and is sent home, it should continued to be monitored for further clinical symptoms as these toxins are taken up by the liver and then excreted via the biliary tract it could be recycled and reabsorbed from the intestines causing recurrence of clinical symptoms.  If this occurs, the animal should be returned to the veterinarian immediately.

*  The poison causes fluid secretion in your dog’s airways, amongst other things, that causes your dog to drown in it’s own body fluids.  The muscle spasms as well as paralysis of the breathing muscles lead to respiratory failure.  The seizures causes brain damage. These are but a couple of things happening in the body and therefore your animal need further treatment to support the organ systems, sort out what is happening in the gut, bronchi, heart, muscles, nerves and brain.

*  Carbamate or organophosphate based products should not be used on affected animals for at least six weeks after recovery.

HOW TO CLEAN UP THE YARD

Keep children and other pets away from the contaminated area!

Search the environment for bait, which is usually meat of some sort with these small gunmetal granules in it.

Always wear rubber  gloves, long sleeves and pants, closed shoes  and glasses when cleaning up the poison.

-       Soil:  moisten the soil with water to prevent dust forming when scooping up the contaminated soil.

-       Place the soil in a thick plastic bag.

-       Use a spade to pick up all the vomit and diarhoea from the animal/s and place it in the plastic bag

-       Dig a hole at least 1 meter deep and not close to a water source

-       Add lime (landboukalk) to the soil in the plastic bag before covering up the hole

-       If small amounts of poison cannot be collected from the soil then lime can be added to the soil to help the toxins to break down faster, please note that the plants most likely will die from such a high Ph in the soil

-       If there are edible plants growing in that soil, DO NOT consume any of it as the toxins are taken up by the plants.

-       Cement:  wash the cement off with dishwashing liquid (not bleach or pool acid), these granules are not very water soluble so rather try and brush the cement clean into

-       Make sure the water (contaminated with poison) do not run off into the  public sewer system or any waterway.

-       Lawn:  mow  the lawn  so that loose lying granules can be collected by the lawnmower and then correctly disposed of.

-       In cases of severe contamination the services of a qualified de-contamination organization should be utilized to clear the respective areas and to dispose of contaminated materials at an accredited depot.

-    Clothingworn when cleaning up the toxins should be incinerated or washed in     soap but that water should not end up in the normal sewerage but disposed of in a 1m deep hole away from water sources or off flow.

HOW TO DISPOSE OF DECEASED ANIMALS

The bodies of dead animals should be incinerated as incineration temperatures will destroy the toxin.  If incineration facilities are not available the animal should be buried at least 1 meter deep, away from food and water supplies.  Cover the body of the animal with lime or soda ash before covering with soil.

HELPING YOU – HELPING YOUR PET

Fireworks nowadays are not just confined to a bonfire nights; they feature at all kinds of events eg. Guy Falkes, New Years

Parties etc. Unfortunately, enjoyed by people, they frighten many animals.

If you're worried about your pet's reaction to fireworks you should ask your vet for advice.

The earlier you do this the better the outcome.

How to help

ECO-FEAR: Available at your nearest Vet or Dis-Chem.  Helps against:

• Anxiety

• Fear of loud noises eg Fireworks, Thunder

• Fear of showing

• Fear of travel and travel sickness

• Hyperactivity, Nervousness

• Stress – tension

Muffle the sounds of the fireworks by closing windows and curtains. Put on some music or the TV.

Keep them inside. Take dogs out for toilet purposes before dark and close cat flaps. A firework going off while they are outside

could lead to a fear of going out

Do not fuss over or try to reassure them when they are frightened. If they rely on you for comfort during frightening events, they

will be less able to cope when you are out which might increase the problem in the long term

Stay calm. Your pet can sense if you are worried which can increase their stress. Let them hide. After the fireworks have

finished you can make a fuss over them as they emerge.

Don't get angry. The behaviour may be annoying but they are scared and getting cross will worsen things. Don't try to remove

your pet from their hiding place, this could lead to aggression.

Talk to your Vet. They can advise short term measures which may include medication if your pet is very distressed. This can

help prevent the fear getting worse. Your vet can also advise a longer term preventative approach. What to do in the long term

Fear of fireworks doesn't get better on it's own, it is likely to get worse over time and lead to other behavioural problems.

Behaviour therapy (including noise desensitisation) is generally very successful at changing the response to fireworks and other

loud noises. The earlier you seek help the better the outcome is likely to be.

THE YORKIE BREED IS KNOWN FOR FLUXATING PATELLAS DO NOT CONFUSE THIS WITH ARTHRITIS

CHECK WITH YOUR OWN VET FOR THE CORRECT DIAGNOSIS.

One of the most common medical issues dogs develop as they age is Arthritis.

Arthritis in dogs can lead to pain that requires medication or, in more severe cases, surgery.

That's why it's so important to know if your dog is at risk and to take preventative measures.

Not all dogs have the same level of risk. Large dogs are more likely to develop arthritis, as are overweight dogs, agility dogs, working dogs or sporting dogs.

Even if you know your dog is at risk, it can sometimes be easy to overlook symptoms of arthritis.

Watch for signs. Dogs that are experiencing joint pain can begin to

  • limp,
  • become sensitive to human contact,
  • exhibit difficulty in walking, running, jumping,
  • lagging during walks
  • getting up slowly after lying down
  • difficulty in squatting to eliminate

If your dog shows any of these signs, get him to a veterinarian - the sooner the better.

To help reduce the risk of arthritis, make sure your dog gets enough exercise and eats right.  A proper weight and healthy diet can make a significant difference in your pets health and arthritic risk.

Even if you find out that your dog does have arthritis, don't feel that medicine and surgery are the only options.

Veterinarians recommend Sashas Blend.

When you switch to Sashas Blend, you can begin to see changes in your dog within 1 week.

Because Sashas Blend is scientifically formulated and has full safety and efficacy studies taken, we guarantee it will do everything we say it can do.

Sashas Blend is the ONLY product that addresses the 4 key needs of:

  • Chondroprotection
  • Pain
  • Inflammation
  • and the provision of essential building blocks for healthy cartilage and joints

You can be CONFIDENT because

  • it works
  • it's safe
  • its cost effective and
  • it is a registered medicine.

Dogs feel pain just like humans do.  Don't put your dog through pain or surgery - watch out for signs of arthritis and visit your veterinarian if you suspect that your dog is showing symptoms.

Ask your vet for the best treatment for your dog - ask for Sashas Blend.

 UNDERSTANDING KENNEL COUGH

Winter is fast approaching and with it comes the risk of your dog going down with this type of cough.

This particular cough is highly contagious, infectious disease that can arise from a variety of viruses, bacteria mycoplasmas and fungi.

Commonly caused by the parainfluenza virus and infectious bacteria.

Easily transmitted by respiratory secretions, such as cough, sneeze droplets and this travels through the air and infects other dogs in the vicinity.

This can be spread amongst dogs in close contact with one another, also in boarding kennels hence the name KENNEL COUGH.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF KENNEL COUGH

Dry cough, sneezing, snorting, gagging and periodically vomiting after a coughing episode.

If your dog is showing any of the above symptoms, you need to see your vet for a course of treatment.

ALL COUGHS are not necessarily Kennel Cough related. Your dog does not have to have been in a kennel or been in close proximity to other dogs to end up with Kennel Cough.

Your vet will decide what is the best treatment for the dog on hand. The disease will last for 7 – 14 days. Remember other dogs in your home or close proximity may go down with this as well.

HOW CAN I PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING TO MY DOG?

Inoculations are available. Some will protect your dog from viruses whereas others will protect from bacteria. In all probability if you kennel your dogs when you are on leave, the Kennel concerned will require your dog has proof of having been inoculated against Kennel Cough.

 UNDERSTANDING CANINE PARVOVIRUS

We have discussed this before, mainly as a result of getting enquiries from the public having purchased a pup with this problem.

We at MIJOY have never ever had this disease - we inoculate.

Here are some extracts from a leaflet I happened to pick up at my vets last week, as well as commonly known info on this disease.

What is parvovirus??? Also referred to as cat flu although has nothing at all to do with cats.

Highly contagious disease can spread from dog to dog, puppy to puppy, directly or indirectly. Main source of contamination is faeces and infected soil etc.

The virus attacks rapidly damaging the lymph nodes, intestinal lining and bone marrow. The rapid death of the intestinal cells results in a breakaway of the intestinal lining, resulting in vomiting, diarrhoea and severe intestinal bleeding.

If not treated your pup is going to die. The smaller the pup, the more risk to the pup. This disease requires prompt treatment by your vet.

WHAT SHOULD YOU BE LOOKING OUT FOR?

 Lethargy

 Vomiting

 Anorexia

 Bloody diarrhoea with a bad smell

 Dehydration

 Eventual collapse of the animal

HOW IS THIS DISEASE TREATED?

First it is a virus, so only the symptoms can be treated not the disease itself. Your vet will treat the dog to avoid dehydration and loss of proteins.

The pup will need a lengthy stay in the clinic of more than likely, at least a week.

The pup will also receive electrolyte and fluid treatments as well as antibiotics. A symptom of this disease is severe vomiting so anti–nausea drugs will also be administered. Plasma transfusions can become necessary. Your vet may very well have to resort to force feeding or tube feeding, as most of the dogs will not eat on their own. Glucose, potassium and blood proteins will all have to be monitored closely in your ailing pup/dog and corrected by your vet if necessary.

PREVENTION IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN CURE – HOW DO YOU PREVENT YOUR DOG OR PUPPY FROM CONTRACTING THIS DISEASE.

Inoculation is THE ONLY way. All pups should receive three inoculations, the first at 6 weeks, the second at 10 weeks and the last one at 14 weeks of age.

Only at this stage, after all four inoculations, will your puppy be considered as being fully inoculated. Prior to this age you should not have your puppy out in public places. The reason - if you go to puppy classes or want to attend puppy training classes, socialising etc, they will only accept your puppy from four months of age and will insist on you supplying them with the pups proof of inoculation certificates.

What can I do to ensure my puppy I am buying from a breeder does not have this problem???

Simple – do not buy a pup that is not inoculated. Only buy a pup that is inoculated and has had the time to develop a certain amount of immunity from that initial inoculation. If the pup was inoculated by the breeder at 6 weeks of age, the best time to take your pup would be at 8 weeks of age.

Three inoculations are given that on the off chance of one not taking effect, the other two will. Hence the reason to keep your pup home and not walking the streets, until all inoculations have been given.

If there is the faintest possibility that the pup has been exposed to the parvovirus it SHOULD NOT be inoculated till sufficient time has passed to ensure it is not incubating the disease. NO pup should leave a breeder if this is a possibility. Remember – there is an incubation period for this disease to manifest in a pup. The reason that a Lady lost her pup she had purchased five days later. The pup was incubating the disease. Purchased pup day one, day four showed signs of parvo and admitted to veterinary clinic – day five – died from parvo. If a pup is incubating a disease and then is given an inoculation on top of that, the pup is going to become considerably ill as a result.

How to I overcome the problems on my property as a result of having an infected pup???

Use diluted JIK just ensure it is on the infected areas for a minimum of ten minutes before removing. If you want to disinfect areas where bleach can do damage use the F10 treatment available from your vet. It is very important that you ensure you do clean all the areas and disinfect all those areas this pup has had access to.

Remember PARVOVIRUS is a young dogs disease, so will affect puppies and young adult dogs only. This however does not mean you should ever neglect inoculating your dog. Parvo is just one of the diseases included in the dog inoculation.

Inoculations should be given annually by your vet once all three initial inoculations have been given and a complete health check done by your vet at the same time.

PLEASE remember that a lot of pups lose their lives from Parvovirus.

REMEMBER – if you intend bringing in another pup to your home where one has just died or just recovered from Parvovirus you should be careful, as the virus hangs around for a lengthy period of time, possibly infecting any new pup you may bring into the home.

How do you overcome this????

Simple, ask your breeder to inoculate your pup at 6 weeks and keep it a further four weeks when it can have its second vaccination – wait a further week before taking your new pup home. If you do not want to wait till your new pup is 11 weeks old before taking it home, hold back on buying a new pup for 6 months. It is believed that this virus can be in the environment for that length of time, still being able to infect your new puppy.

One of the most serious concerns is that of staff walking this disease onto your property, visitors etc. Can be carried on shoes etc.

REMEMBER sterilisation should be done at 6 months of age. Prior to your dog becoming sexually active. Large breed dogs will come on heat anytime from 6 months of age, the smaller breeds will in all probability come on heat at 9 or 10 months of age.

Hi to you all.

I WELCOME the opportunity to give my side to this story.

However I would like to give you some info about how I operate etc. Before I give MY SIDE to the accusations made about me.

I have owned Yorkshire terrier’s since I was 21 years of age. I am a blessed Grandmother. I am passionate about my animals anyone who knows me to any degree, is well aware of that. I have bred YORKSIRE TERRIERS for three decades

The Yorkshire terrier has formed part of my adult life MY ENTIRE ADULT LIFE.

FIRSTLY this is all about a teacup dog. NOT JUST ANY DOG REFERRED TO AS A TEACUP,  A GENUINE TEACUP. The person approached me in March 2021 about wanting a teacup dog, we spent lengthy periods of time on what’s app phone calls etc, emails, I have all of those.

I explained to her how I operate WHY I operate as I do, as the teacup is something that draws so much attention the reason so many adverts appear stating pups to be teacup which are clearly not teacup dogs.

Just some history here I have sold a few teacups and pocket pups to the public who have been GENUINELY conned by breeders when they have purchased what supposedly was meant to be a teacup dog and they received the pup and it was ill, at the vet daily for days on end, before it finally passed leaving that owner, DEVASTATED. NOT to mention their financial loss of HUGE amounts.   I help people out who have gone through this sad situation. I do ensure however that people wanting this size of dog are fully aware how to handle it. A REALLY tiny teacup is not suited to the majority of the public.  I say I HELP PEOPLE out i do not reduce my prices, i will accept them paying off as was done in this situation. READ ON

It is also obvious to me that the public do not realise the intense work, dedication required to raise these very small sized pups.

So let me explain how I operate, this size of pup GENUINE TEACUP  is normally collected from me NEVER shipped. In years gone by I had buyers from abroad come to SA collect their pup and return to their country pup in cabin. HOWEVER with the laws changing, I cannot and will not do this as it is a major risk to the pup,  even though they are here for the best part of 12 to 16 weeks depending on how easy they are etc they are very hands on and require commitment and care around the clock 24/7 which I give them.  I also do not produce pups by the dozen ever and the genuine teacup only appears rarely not something we have in abundance at any time ever. My teacUps are produced as nature inteneded NOT manipulised to be produced by myself  AS NATURE INTENDED the reason i can and do sell with health guarantees as i have done for all these years. NO overnight senstation.

At the time of this going down, I had covid and all, ANYTHING but well, I am sure most of you reading this have lost family, friends colleagues to COVID and most people are well aware that it takes it out of one and the recovery takes time et.

COVID and all,  I was still up every two to three hours around the clock NIGHT AND DAY to see to this tiny baby. It is simple you dont keep an eye that pup may not survive the night especially in the cold weather.

So this particular pup referred to below was meant to leave me after my Hubby and i, were both cleared of being infectious.

We used to frequent shopping malls with some of our real teacup dogs. but in November 2018 were asked to refrain from doing that as we caused a security risk not only to ourselves, our dogs but the public in general. WE were swarmed by people.

Due to the fact that we had ringworm introduced to our animals by a visiting member of the public in 2008 we decided not to put ourselves or animals at any risk. IT took thousands of rands, not to mention intensive labour to rid our animals and our property of ringworm so there was no way I was going to go down that road AGAIN. In fact my vet had warned me years before that no matter who came to my property it was a risk to my animals. Disease is often carried on shoes etc. SINCE that time with crime as it is now and we have HIGH crime in our area we opt not to have buyers to our home. NO one can gauarntee they are not carrying any form of disease they walk the streets.

Frequently a buyer will visit one breeder then another and that in itself is a massive risk to a breeder. The spread of disease being quite easily done.  I cannot sell with health guarantees if i let people onto my property, into my home to view and handle dogs and pups. IT IS WAY MORE IMPORTANT I HAVE PEACE OF MIND THAT THE PUP I HAND OVER HAS NO HEALTH ISSUES AS ALL. MY BUYERS THEN HAVE TOTAL PEACE OF MIND WHEN RECEIVING THAT FUR BUNDLE.

I operate on photos. And I have done that very successfully for all these years, if anyone is not happy with the pup at time of collection they are very welcome to refuse the pup. HOWEVER NEVER HAS HAPPENED EVER….

I am often offered BRIBES to come to see pups, it is nothing personal, nothing that I do to irritate people I just cannot afford the cost, the work involved to cure ringworm, anyone that thinks it is NOTHING think again. 6 weeks of treatment daily anything less, wasting your time. Daily disinfecting, after all of that FUMIGATION. You then sit hoping and praying that you do not see any evidence of it appearing again. The fur that drops out of infected areas on animals THE SPORES attacked to the end of every single hair,  can lie around and remain contagious for YEARS to come.

IT is way more important to me to hand over a perfectly healthy pup than hand over a pup that may have an issue with the public handling them?

ALL OF MY BUYERS APPRECIATE BEING SOLD HEALTH GUARANTEED PUPS, they dont have the first issue.

I send pups all over SA miles from where I live and all those people see pics and buy on pics. I HAVE YET TO HAVE THE FIRST DISSATISFIED CLIENT AND IF “if” THAT HAD TO GO DOWN I WOULD SEE WHAT I COULD DO TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION. ALL MY PUPS ARE SOLD WITH HEALTH GUARANTEES, WHICH I FEEL is far more important to me, to the public, as to be guaranteed your pup will not go down with parvo or distemper or is not incubating the disease when leaving me. To be guaranteed of no skin disease, no internal or external parasites of any kind is how I operate. All my pups are guaranteed to be fully socialized when leaving me and we guarantee our pups temperaments to be exceptional. We do not cage breed or have kennels either. All our pups leave us PREVENT treated again ticks and fleas. we dot every "i" and cross every't'. We take NO chances.

The complainant was advised of all of this prior to even asking to buy a MIJOY pup. i IN FACT HAVE THE ORIGINAL EMAIL from her that i answered in full explaining it all in detail. She was happy with the terms and conditions.

I have imported dogs from the States I bought them on photo’s.

NO one has ever been UNHAPPY with their pup, to the contrary over the moon delighted. I get referrals in numbers and loads of repeat business. i have NEVER ever had the first complaint regarding my pups being sold that are ill or sickly.

SO let me get to this story,  always two sides to a story.

Her complaint appears in BLACK below my response in RED. This now appears on Hello PETER as of two days ago, I was advised by email by HELLO PETER. This sadly goes down with people who feel they have been done an injustice of sorts, in fact they should be made to provide proof of everything before allowed to submit anything and then most of the complaints in fact would not exist and most certainly would not be published. all complaints should be made as in a SWORN AFIDAVIT we would not then see the likes of this going down.

Left heartbroken and out of pocket by Mijoy.

It was explained in DETAIL to the future interested party how I operated. Forms to be completed which protect the buyer and the seller,  a deposit etc to be paid at the time of sending the forms in. The deposit is to join the list, does not relate to a particular pup. GENUINE TEACUPS are rare and the complainant is fully aware of that.  I have operated on this basis as the time I took names and numbers I sat with 300 to 400 people’s info most were a waste of time and the GENUINE interested parties got lost in the crowd. NO one has a gun held to their head, it is their choice NOT MINE. Join or don’t, makes no difference to me. you come to me for a pup you are told you may wait i dont make out a dog is one size when it is a totally different size, for really small sized pups it takes time, i dont work from a GROWTH CHART that is in more cases inaccurate to what it is accurate. i work on hard facts i have worked on for well over two decades in relation to the tinies.

The complainant requested the forms to join the list for a teacup pup. The completed forms duly arrived back, NO deposit attached when the forms distinctly read deposit required to join list, after two months I emailed the person stating I was discarding her forms she could send them in again when she had the deposit. I was asked to hold on deposit would arrive. I went out of my way to assist her I don’t normally accept any FORMS without a deposit (that is no different to taking names and numbers and if people have come to me having lost thousands as a result of being sold a Sick pup that died I will make an exception but they put down some form of deposit. However in the complainanats case, maybe four months later she started making a contribution to the deposit to join the list. ( I have all the documentation relating to every bit of this story) I received the first amount against the deposit.  It took a good while longer until the deposit that should have been forwarded in March was finally received. I could not have done more to assist this person.

I booked a teacup Yorkie puppy from Joyce Kelly. I paid a deposit of R 4000 and then an additional R 5000 once we had agreed on a specific puppy. ALL SOUNDS REALLY BAD HOWEVER READ ON…..We agreed on whatsapp to a price (I still have all the messages and voice notes) and that I would finish paying for, and collect the puppy in October. She told me clearly that the puppy was mine. She asked for the price was told the asking price sent via whats app.

Now the complainant told me she would only be able to afford to buy a teacup pup in November of this year 2021 when she received her retirement package. I had told her I may not be able to help her right away as these dogs are not easy to come by etc. However she had said she may very well be able to afford one far earlier as she was expecting her tax returns. THE ONLY REASON this particular pup was offered to her NOT for any other reason.

This pup became available when someone who had booked her got another pup from me on collection day, she now owns THREE of my dogs.  Over the moon with them. So this baby became available.

I mentioned it in passing to the complainant as well as to another person on my waiting list. The other person wanted the pup FULL ASKING PRICE no issues at all however this pup would need to travel to her destination and in the colder months that to me is somewhat dangerous. As I mentioned above my genuine tinies are normally collected NOT SHIPPED. The interested party could not fetch the pup the complainant of course was over the moon and PLEASE she is mine. I want her. i will do anythign PLEASE i want her.

I TOLD THE COMPLAIANT THAT I HAD ANOTHER BUYER AND THAT I WOULD ONLY CONSIDER SELLING THE PUP TO HER BECAUSE OF THE RISK TO THE PUP TRAVELLING IN THE COLD. I EXPLAINED THE PUP COULD GO AND SAID TO HER when can i expect payment. IT WAS THEN AND ONLY then the money came in towards payment up till then the deposit amount had been forthcoming.

The only reason this pup was ever mentioned was because of her telling me she may be able to pay from her TAX refund she would get in July.  I advised her the pup could leave.  She then said let me do my finances. Came back and said could not get the money together.  I said if I discount her price will that help. She would go do the math’s again. I have all these messages.  ONCE again came back stating there was no way she could do that, the only thing she could do was pay over a further three payments month ends which meant that pup would remain here for a further good length of time. She made it quite clear she would far prefer I had the pup than take it and possibly not be around to care for it as I do. So once again I was putting myself out for her.

So I agreed to waiting a further three months more ( a total of SEVEN MONTHS SINCE SHE FILLED IN FORMS) HOWEVER only once I had recovered from covid and worked out my finances did I come to realise she had taken the discounted amount over three months NOT THE ACTUAL asking price which she had asked for when the pup was offered her.

Now as far as I am aware, offered a SPECIAL price discounted for an immediate payment, does not apply to terms of payment over a further three months.  Not to mention, that would involve my being responsible for this baby 24/7 for all this additional length of time. NEVER offered me anything for my costs etc, I am not against holding onto any pup for anyone if they are going away etc but I do not expect them to EXPECT it of me ON a discounted price they should not have entertained in the first place.  it is a huge responsibility especially that size of pup.

The complainant knew perfectly well of the other buyer who never questioned price at all. It is no secret what is charged for this size of pup and well worth it considering, it is a teacup dog, it will be healthy, it leaves me having had all three inoculations including rabies, it is micro chipped. this size pup is fed around the clock night and day for weeks and leading into months. She clearly knew all the work dedication that goes into raising a mouse of a pup from my side.  We had discussed this numerous times.  The complainant knew I had to advise the other buyer she had asked for the pup and hence apologized to her. IF this had been summer warm weather NO RISK OF COLD SNAPS GOING DOWN,  this situation would never have arisen,.  The pup would have gone to the other buyer long distance.

Surely it is logical why would I wait three months more to be paid a reduced price if I could have been paid immediately the full price????? I did it out of the kindness of my heart never ever thinking or it even crossing my mind she expected this pup at a reduced price after all the time i had to wait and babysit.

I received pictures and updates of my puppy and had already chosen a name for our new "baby". I would have gone to see the pup, but this was not permitted by the breeder.  As explained above she was fully aware of the way I operate or she could have bought elsewhere and was told as much. Hundreds of breeders to go to. To me, buying this puppy was like adopting a new family member - as well as a lot of money, I put my heart and hopes in Mijoy. To me the breeder it is always about the dog NEVER the human I go all to ensure my pups land in the right homes. Then out of the blue  I RAISED THE fact about the discounted price long before this time with the complainant.one Saturday, just after I had made a payment, Joyce messaged me saying she wanted a higher price. I wasn't prepared to just agree to paying extra money for a puppy I had already reserved. TERMS AT A DISCOUNT RATE FOR AN IMMEDIATE PAYMENT ??????She cancelled the deal there and then.  Interesting when in fact the complainant forwarded me her banking details which were never requested by myself. Once I received that text, I read no more of her threats, advising me how I would operate and handle this situation.  Her last contribution to the down payment I advised her once that reflected in my bank account she would be refunded THIS WAS AFTER I WAS SENT THE BANKING DETAILS OF HERS via whats app . I have that too.... the messages came in in numbers once I had seen the banking details I felt there was NOTHING more needing to be discussed. I had suggested to her if she was having issues financially to rather opt for a pup at a later stage or if she was not happy, to cancel, I NEVER said I was cancelling ever. She came back yet again telling me that I knew how difficult it had been for her to find the money and she was getting that puppy no matter what I said on the matter.  If you cannot afford something don’t try and buy it, lots of things I would love to own but don’t as I cannot afford to own what I desire. if however you will try your utmost and take a further three month end payments, don't short change the seller. i was happy enought to wait but most certainly not at a discounted rate offered her at the time for an immediate payment. I thought thqat would go without saying as much.

So I thought that was that HOWEVER after I had refunded her and she is correct in saying I deducted R500-00, that stands in the contract, I cancel full refund, buyer cancels less 10%. I did not deduct 10% far less. Maybe it is expected of me, to send out newsletters which I have done so for years educating, advising etc. not a one or two page newsletter either, sometimes 15 to 30 pages, number 167 for October 2021 is heading out. She received 7 newsletters.   All the emails, bank charges, messaging back and forward the LENGTHY discussions,  ????  The complainant referred this to the consumer council and once they had THE STORY as it is, they clearly did not act as she had expected them to, HENCE This new story.

SO the funds appeared and she was refunded as in immediately, LESS the admin cost, which considering all the times she was sent information, updates etc I think well worth it. i never bothered to read teh umpteen threatening messages, but what i did read was you better do x y and z or else.....  It was never about the R500-00 it was all about the way in which she handled this situation.  Telling me how I would do this that or the other. Once she got notification of the refund, back she came yet again with more YOU WILL DO X YOU WILL DO Y,  ETC.  I then received a call from a charming lady stating she was a friend of the complainant’s and could I please go back to the sale as the complaint was devastated, this person only appeared to know PART of the story as well. the complainant wanted the deal to go ahead. I did explain to the third party the additional weeks of being responsible for that pup, NO offer of any kind towards food etc, NOT that I am saying I would have asked it at all, I am more than happy to receive the FULL asking price and keep the pup for no matter how long is required.  Done it for loads of people over many years. MY logic let the pup remain here than risk taking it letting a thrid party take responsibility and have a possible issue go down.  HOWEVER the last thing I expected was three months terms on a price for immediate payment.

I said to THE FRIEND may I tell you the story from MY SIDE she said please do. AND I DID. I told her there was no going back after I received the banking details that made it more than clear to me the buyer was no longer interested.  However she was more than surprised I had the banking details from the complainant, she was never told that part.

So she asked me very nicely if we could not get back on track if the complainant came up with the monies owing, IN the next day or so.  I would have considered that but I then had to explain after I received the banking details, I immediately contacted the other buyer explained to her same pup I had offered her before but because of the weather risk to flying her baby opted to let the other person get her. HOWEVER now there were issues and the buyer cancelled.  She accepted the pup and deal done at the ASKING PRICE.

I am offered way more than my asking price frequently for people to get a teacup dog HOWEVER I don’t operate on that basis at all, however when I go out of my way to HELP someone keeping a pup for weeks longer than I need do and then this goes down????? She could have handled this situation very differently. I don’t like being THREATENED who does?

The FRIEND lady on the phone I have her details as well was surprised the pup was already sold, the complainant knew all along there was another buyer at full asking price, I had only gone out of my way to try and  help her and get the pup to a home where it did not need to travel being cold weather.

I had to phone the friend and request that the complainant refrain from harrassing me, or i would have no option other than to block her. NO Idea after that but the  messags kept coming which i did not even open or read and i had no choice other than to BLOCK HER.

FURTHER TO THIS SCENARIO.  In our lengthy communications the Complainant had advised she is a cat breeder. The breed of cat she breeds is in fact the same breed of a cat i owned that had passed  at 19 years of age a rescue cat., passed a year or more before we came to know of each other.  HEARING this was a rescue cat, that was with us for 19 wonderful years, she then said to me they often got cats in for rehoming and if she got something would let me know. She would give it to me. The terms she SHOULD have used or advised me regarding her rescues were that she in fact SOLD her rescues.  I should have been advised of that, however she had referred me to two cats needing rehoming before and NO mention of cost was involved.

It then was mentioned that there was a particular cat that may be available for rehoming, she would let me know.  Sent me a few pics of this cat in her previous home.  She would let me know once the owner brought the cat to her.  I then thought well I would take the cat and not be concerned about the discount offered for payment end August.  She then came back and said they sold their rescues R1500 to R2000-00. This cat would be R2 000-00.  I was more than surprised as surely you advise the interested part you charge a fee for a cat you don’t make the statement I will give you one. I knew nothing of her operation on what basis she operated.  Well I most certainly would not mislead anyone if it were me.

I was then advised the yorkie and the rescue cat had nothing whatsoever to do with each other???  Sorry same person.

She then advised she would ask her partner regarding the cat and come back to me. She never did.

I was told she sold my puppy to someone else for the higher price. She agreed to refund me, once my latest payment cleared To add insult to injury I have not been refunded the full R 9000. She retained R 500 of my money for "admin costs" and to date, has still refused to pay me back the balance of my money. I did not expect this from someone who claims to be a reputable and ethical breeder. From my side, I had kept to every part of our agreement ... but all the many voice notes, photos and text messages from this breeder meant nothing in the end. I was not the one to cancel - I told her clearly that I did not want to lose this puppy. In addition to the heartbreak, why should I be expected to pay R500 for her decision to pull out?

My reply to her last paragraph. If you find it necessary as you clearly do, to make a statement or a few, please quote the facts as they are in detail and in full. Not your version. SHE CANCELLED NOT ME, I NEVER REQUESTED HER BANKING DETAILS SHE FORWARDED THEM TO ME.  I did not proceed with the sale of this pup until such times as she made it clear to me she was cancelling, forwarding me her banking details as she did.

Clearly is still annoying, the complainant. Next time HOPEFULLY she  handles the situation differently and the person or persons involved as well and don’t go into attack mode as with some people, that does not wash.

Very sad to think SOME people think this is acceptable to go to the lengths she is going to to try and LABEL me a CON. if i were that con i would not be selling people pups that I sold their parents pups to, when they were kiddies in the home. I would not be doing repeat business as I do,  nor would I receive referrals as I do. There is a way to conduct yourself and if you resort to a half story  to portray yourself as OH SO HARD DONE BY,  NOT a nice thing to do. THE TRUTH WILL OUT.  IF this were to go down before, i would have ignored it, but i feel NOW people attack me, i retaliate NO MORE sitting back the TRUTH WILL OUT.

I thank you for your time.

Hello! I am considering adopting a Teacup Yorkie and I believe that your puppies are responsibly and ethically bred and I would love to get in touch with you. (I’m looking for a female, preferably ) I would like to enquire about the requirements and the process of adopting a puppy. Kind regards, C

Mijoy Yorkie Puppy Scam

SCAM: We lost R5000 under the impression we would get a Yorkie puppy. Long story short - we should never have paid with out seeing the puppy first, unfortunately my mother is very impressionable and honest and believes the best in people. There are two different websites for the same company. Two different sets of contact details. There is a real Mijoy Yorkie puppy breeder based in Fourways, and her name is really Joyce. But there is a group of people who have copied her website, use her name and expect payment with out seeing the puppy first. The only way around this is: 1. Go and see the puppy first, and pay cash when you collect it. 2. For Joyce ( the real Joyce) to fight to get her "competitor" shut down as Mijoy will continue to get a bad name. 3. Consider getting a rescue. There are so many beautiful Yorkies that need homes, why support breeders?

This information above, if this were indeed the case why would the preson go back to the breeder in the first place they consider to be a scam and to say such a thing as another website exists under the same name. CLEARLY know precisely nothing of how it actually works, i have a registered domain for my website that is registered worldwide. A domain i have owned for many years.

THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANYTHING OF THE KIND GO DOWN EVER. ONE HAS TO WONDER WHY PEOPLE RESORT TO DOING THIS SORT OF THING, I GUESS WHEN THEY GO TO SOME BACKYARD BREEDER WHO BAD MOUTHS THE BREEDER THEY WENT TO IN THE FIRST PLACE and they actually believe the person concerned.....

Reading the above once again on a site ONCE again total nonsense.  The mail from this person that i orgiinally received appears above this. Loads of more emails from this person. He was then advised by SOME OR OTHER BREEDER that he would wait forever for a teacup dog from me that in fact i was a scam. HOW charming.  I dont pass remarks on any other breeder EVER, but some breeders do pass comments, on other breeders they know preceilsey NOTHING about. IT is quite obvious it goes a lot deeper than being envious, green etc They are right to a degree anyone wanting a proper TEACUP PUP will in all liklihood wait and everyone joining a list on that score is told as much.IN fact i go to great lengths when i get enquiries people wanting teacups to find out exactly what they consider a teacup pup to be. SO many will say we have one it is 2kg? What ????? while others come to me explaining how they bought this TEACUP pup and it died in a couple of weeks but then the breeder told them it is to be expected, TEACUPS are all sickly pups live short lives? REALLY????  in fact i have sold to a few people having experienced those breeders with so much to say, the sickly pups they sell.

If I was told this by my breeder of choice, a known fact that teacup pups are sickly, suffer with health issues, die young,  ?????? This the buyer is told AFTER THE FACT WHEN THEY DONT HAVE THE PUP OR THE MONEY AND NOT TO MENTION VET BILLS RUNNING INTO THOUSANDS.  I would want to know why i was not told this when they gave their intital sales pitch. I would ask then why do you sell them, why do you breed them, why do you advertise them.???? Why dont you advise your buyers they dont live long lives or at least be honest and say WHY YOURS DONT LIVE LONG LIVES....  Be honest yourself, get the pole out of your eye before you try to get the splinter out of someone else's.

I used to be trusting of what people said NOW anyone tells me they owned a teacup in the year dot and so forth, I dont take that as gospel i want to know a good few facts.  MANY years ago i sold teacups to people i believed knew what they were doing, after giving me a long speech. All were required to have postmortems done and NOT one of these pups had died as a result of the way they were bred, it was the way they were managed. They lost their pups, in fact happened about four or so years back as well, guy said or his wife did and the pup in question was bigger NOT a teacup dog at all but  would have ended up 1.3kg to 1.4kg . I kept enquiring as to how the baby was doing and i was told in a rather obnoxious way by his wife did i not think them capable of caring for a small sized pup.  WELL i did not reply on that however some three months later they lost their puppy.  I was accused of having sold a sick pup to them but i dont fall for that, i want a laboratory test done and it was done and once again this gentleman came at me stating he insisted on this dog being replaced by end of week ????????  Once again showing how LITTLE the public actually know about tiny dogs.  I dont breed dogs by the dozens, plenty of BREEDERS out there that do, I don't fall into that category. One of the reasons i get called up and people want to come play with pups and let the pup choose them???? Sorry please go somewhere else, i dont have umpteen pups sitting here ever. The majortiy of mine are booked before born. The way I OPT to conduct my story.

So the laboratory report clearly was done and i have never heard from this gentleman ever again.  His mother in fact owns a 1.5kg very healhty dog of mine for years now.

There is another story out there from MONIQUE - years back, she at least usese her real name some revert to using an alias.  Young woman who told me her father was dying of cancer.  Who says such things? So much for that i found out to the contrary and when I challenged her on that she too turned NASTY.  If only these people were honest WITH THEMSELVES to begin with.

Dear Public BEWARE ...

  • If you make enquiries from breeders who criticise, bad mouth, other breeders think LONG AND HARD. the reason behind them doing that?  If a breeder has to resort to badmouthing another breeder, they clearly have a problem selling their pups, to put someone else down to make sales????. IN fact anyone who criticises anyone else has no right as they should keep their nose in their own lane.  Best you investigate these breeders find out more, checkup if they have not perhaps been involved with a court case or two as breeders in the past, who had so much to say about ME landed up in court. Nothing to do with me, but other folk they pulled similar stunts on as they pulled on me. OH DEAR.... as i say the wheel does turn....
  • Does your breeder of choice have their own website and if they do is it updated regularly or if you go view it does it have information dating back to years ago NEVER UPDATED.???? Is it a website worth viewing or a mere PUPPIES for sale page? What type of website is it, a FREEBY???? NOT all free websites are uninformative at all, not what i am saying, however viewing a website will give you way more information onthe breeder themselves. IF THEY PUT IN EFFORT TO what they do.  How long has the breeder in question been breeding? if they want to throw stones, best they not live in glass houses.
  • Why do breeders label pups as teacups that are not teacups???? TO MAKE SALES.
  • Dont believe what you read go to the breeder concerned to find out what is THE STORY, BEHIND THE STORY, from time to time I have this go down and imagine the surprise to the enquiring party when they are in fact TOLD THE TRUTH, sent the proof, which in turn makes them pass comments such as .... what type of person resorts to doing this?  I would never think of doing that to anyone. WELL Most people would not.  Over a good many years i as MIJOY have been taken to the cleaners by breeders, i have gone back to the breeder given them the proof, substantiating what I said had gone done. NOT some pipe dream either and they have come back saying NOT MY PROBLEM, your problem or the likes.... or as of late a breeder who sold me (maybe three years back) a pup that died a matter of a week or so later with LIVER SHUNT, i was told i don't guarantee my pups you buy my pups you take it as is.????????  WE do and have always sold every pup with health guarantees.

I was sold a teacup years back by a breeder who is still very much around TODAY. Sold the pup at an astronomical price way back then, pup not even inoculated.  So we at that stage MANY YEARS BACK, arranged to go and see the breeder for a pup.  I then said i am mad about teacups at which time out came this other pup.  The breeder was not exactly close to where we came from so i said to the breeder LADY i will have the pup inoucalted myself OH GREAT and sorry i dont have anything like that amount in cash, will you accept a cheque? She did however not before she wrote on the back of the cheque NO guarantees of any kind on this pup.  However sad to say on taking the pup the following day to the vet for her first incoulation i was told NOT TO BOTHER inoculating pup had NO SKULL. i went back to the breeder to be told. YOU bought her YOUR PROBLEM.  One and the same breeder who today critizes TEACUP PUP BREEDERS oh I wish I was one of those types,   I would go back and say remember how you conned me way back then??? However i live by the rule THE WHEEL TURNS.........

Someone else claiming they paid and never got their teacup,  PLEASE after this person cancelled puppy after puppy year in and year out, claiming she paid X, no money, no pup. YET another one who tried her blackmailing tactics, YOU HAVE TILL SUCH AND SUCH A DATE TO GIVE ME A TEACUP PUP OR BETTER STILL ONE OF YOUR OWN ADULT TEACUPS OR ELSE I WILL MAKE SURE I DESTROY YOU....

ONE THING ABOUT THIS TYPE OF THING GOING DOWN, these types never will ever own a MIJOY dog EVER.  She was refunded. I did not have proof of the payment she claimed she had paid asked her for the proof.  NEVER received it.   The wheel turns.  She was refunded the amount i had proof of her paying, NOT what she claimed she had paid.

THANK YOU for taking time to read this nonsense above.  NOT to listen to GOSSIPERS rather go to the breeder concerned let them explain to you in detail and as i do forward the proof to you.

I have people constantly contacting me if we had only known about you, typical example happened a few months back, we would not have bought two pups that died of PARVO a week after we took them home, as happened to one lady who came to me, I DONT have either pup I dont have the money but I do have a very fat vet bill.?????? this would never go down wiht a pup from MIJOY ours are guaranteed that will not go down.
